Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Discover STEM Racing Mauritius

Curious about STEM Racing? Whether you are a student interested in engineering, a parent looking for an educational opportunity, or a teacher who would like to introduce the challenge at your school, you will find some useful answers below.

1. What is STEM Racing?

STEM Racing, formerly known as Formula 1 in Schools, is an international educational challenge that brings science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) to life.

Students work in teams to design, develop, manufacture and test miniature Formula 1-style racing cars. They also learn about aerodynamics, engineering, project management, teamwork, branding, marketing and sponsorship.

The challenge gives students the opportunity to experience what it is like to work as a real motorsport team, while developing skills that can help them in their future studies and careers.

2. Who can participate in STEM Racing Mauritius?

STEM Racing Mauritius is designed for students aged 11 to 19.

Students participate in teams of 3 to 6 members. Each team works together, sharing responsibilities and combining different skills to complete its project.

Schools can encourage students to form teams and participate with the support of a teacher, mentor or another responsible adult.

You do not need to be a Formula 1 fan or even have an interest in motorsport to participate! STEM Racing is first and foremost an educational challenge. It is about creativity, science, technology, engineering, teamwork, problem-solving and innovation. Whether you enjoy designing, building, technology, mathematics, business, marketing or simply discovering new things, there is a place for you in a STEM Racing team.

You do not need to be an engineering expert to take part. Curiosity, creativity, teamwork and a willingness to learn are a great place to start!

3. How can my school or team register?

To participate, students should first form a team and identify the school or educational institution they will represent.

The team must then complete the official registration process through the STEM Racing Mauritius programme.

Registration includes providing the required team and participant information and paying the applicable registration fee.

Once registered, each team will receive a STEM Racing Starter Pack (Guide). This pack contains step-by-step instructions explaining how to prepare for the challenge, organise the team and work through the different stages of the project. It will help students understand what is expected and how to get ready for the competition.

Each team will also receive its official team number and further information about the challenge once registration closes.

4. How much does it cost to participate?

According to the current programme guide, the registration fee is MUR 3,500 per participant.

For example, a team of three students would have a registration fee of MUR 10,500.

Additional costs may arise during the project, depending on the team’s design, materials, equipment, manufacturing requirements and other activities.

Teams are encouraged to explore sponsorship opportunities and fundraising initiatives to support their participation.

Please refer to the latest official STEM Racing Mauritius announcement to confirm the applicable fees and payment arrangements before making a payment.

5. Do I need special equipment, software or training to participate?

STEM Racing Mauritius provides teams with a learning resources, guides and educational materials to help them understand the challenge and develop their skills.

Please note that STEM Racing is not a formal training programme. Teams are expected to take responsibility for their own preparation, study the resources provided and work through the different stages of the challenge.

We strongly recommend that each team has the support of a teacher, mentor or another responsible adult who can guide, encourage and support students throughout the project. This guidance is particularly important as students learn to use the software, organise their work and develop their racing car.

Two important learning resources are:

  • STEM Racing Learn: An online learning platform providing educational content and resources related to the challenge.
  • Autodesk Fusion 360: Professional design software used to create and develop the racing car in 3D.

Students can also benefit from tutorials, sample files, introductory resources and the step-by-step instructions included in their Starter Pack.

When doing so, teams must clearly identify themselves as participants in the STEM Racing Mauritius programme and explain that they are seeking support for their own team.
